During the ‘long night of sciences‘ in Halle we prepared an action space, where visitors at all ages can see imaginary two dimensional projected scenarios and can play with it. You can be a part of this ephemeral scenario, if you go into the room. Immersive projections taken by two projectors on phosphorescent walls. These created moments are just like some past and recurring thoughts in your life.

Pay attention on these things, which seems not important to you, which goes out of our senses in all day life. As intensive relationships between peoples in our networked all day life, for example. This close friendship grows up, if you take care of it. When you also take care of the grass in this application, you can hear grass growing. The grass is growing and generates more and more messages from different peoples about friendships. So listen to its behaviour. At the beginning of your relationship to this grass, you hear some words, like “friends”, “yours”, “lost” etc. More and more words come through and at the end, when the grass is growing up, you get a message about importance of friendships to others.

Technology:

Roots are suited for used with technical extensions. The roots give feedback about the growth through the conductivity of electricity. A Microcontroller reads the signals and sends it to multiplexer to start sound-modules, on which saved fragments of sentences, playing over a loudspeaker. The grass container in this application consists of three layers. At the first layer, grass grows on a mesh of cooper-wires. The roots grow to the second layer. So different of contacts are closed and give signals. The friend of this application, see and hear what is going on over time.

external website >> The haptical device combines the tactile and visual habited experiences of surfaces with some accurate sound based perception. The contact of the finger with the surface results in vibrations, which are amplified over a microphone. Additional Sensors detects the position of hand and help to change some certain frequencies. This tangible device makes it possible to define nuances of surfaces and materials. The sound can be smooth, rough, hard or soft as the surface is founded in.

external website >> Surfaces of our surroundings (products, clothes, interieurs, fassades) are in our perception, but without going in exchange with us. The “interactive tablecloth” is a prototype, to communicate and interact over materials and surfaces. It reacts on persons to open different behaviours. The surface texture changes depends on the way we interact in, if its on breakfast, only drinking coffe or at dinner. The effect of pressure or heat up some areas on the tablecloth through a cup or hand results in a change of color on the surface. This change happens direct at the point of action, but also results in change of other parts at the surface. This reaction run through distances to couple some people using it.

Technology:
The tablecloth depends on three layers. The lowest one registrate contacts of objects on the tablecloth over six pressure sensors. In the middle layer knitted with conductive yarns, wich heat up individually when current flows through it, cause in high resistance. The upper layer was screen printed with thermochromic pigment, which changes color into colorless. So a full saturated pigment under comes visible. 
When the tablecloth is in usage with some objects or interactions on it, it reads through the sensors the input and gave it to a microcontroller, which get the signal to open current to heat up the yarns. In the result the surface of the interactive tablecloth is changing his structure to communicate.

external website >>Traces are created on objects, when we interact with it. These traces tell us something about happens before. It is more or less visible, preferred or not wanted. The waterradio describes this. Some pouring liquids connect nearly invisible contacts in the season state of a wooden board. Different waterconnection between contacts results in different Frequencies. So, the listener want to create and change some traces intentional, not to eliminate these in common.

Clemens Winkler born 1982 in Halle (Saale), Germany. He started in ‘Design Products’ at HKD Halle (Saale), Germany. 2005 product and technology research for 'Braun GmbH' Germany with stay in Tokyo. 2007 he made a sound installation at ‘Hackesche Hoefe’ and exhibited his 'interactive tablecloth' in Berlin. 2008 he studied in the 'Digital Media Class' of Prof. J. Sauter & Prof. J. Ängeslevä at University of Arts, Berlin. 2009 he worked for a publication 'Smart Surfaces' (Birkhäuser-Verlag). In 2010 he finished his studies with the project 'unter Strom' in cooperation with 'interactive Insitute'-Stockholm and 'TITV Greitz'. At the moment he starts as research fellow at architecture department - university kassel. He works in digital media and research between perception, behaviour and materiality. He lives and works in Kassel and Berlin.
